SOLSC Day 3 Seeing Dr. Suess in a new way!

Slice of Life Story Challenge -- Day 3  #SOL17
Seeing Dr. Suess in a new way!

*******************
In the lovely city of Springfield, Massachusetts is hidden a remarkable place with beautiful trees, grassy areas, stone paths, and sculptures of whimsical creatures. This park-like setting is home to a tribute to the incredible words and outstanding works of Dr. Suess.

If you ever have a chance to visit this magical place, I would recommend it. There is much to see!

The Cat in the Hat and Dr. Suess himself are just a few of the sculptures to view there.

Horton, Sam-I-Am, Gertrude McFuzz,
The Grinch, Thing 1 and Thing 2,
and even the town of Whoville
are some of the other sculptures to see...

...along with a giant sculpture, including the entire text, of the book
Oh, The Places You'll Go!

Such a beautiful way to read this lovely book.  :-)

As a child, I appreciated the works of Dr. Suess. When I became a teacher (quite a few years ago now), I noticed that his books were somewhat dismissed by other educators and writers, who considered them to be simple nonsense... silly rhymes meant to entertain, but not educate, children. A person only has to read The Lorax to know how wrong that thinking was.

I am glad to see that Dr. Suess and his works are viewed differently now. There is so much to learn from him and his books! I hope that all adults will remember to share Dr. Suess's writings with each new generation of children that comes along.

And if any adults reading this are ever near Springfield, MA, make sure to drop in to the Dr. Suess National Memorial Sculpture Garden...and experience Dr. Suess in a whole new way yourself.

:-)

  1. Your recommendation sounds very inviting. I would love to see a whole book as a sculpture. A magnificent tribute to an author.

  2. I had no idea this exited. We have a Beverly Cleary park in Portland with sculptures of her characters, but this one is news to me. I am adding it to my bucket list.

    1. I had no idea, either, until my brother and sister-in-law took me there. I'm so glad that they like to explore New England (they live in CT) and that THEY knew about it. 😀 ~JudyK

  3. What a great thing to add to my knowledge about Dr. Seuss. I'll have to show the kids some pictures of his sculpture garden. I agree with you about the important voice that Dr. Seuss has had in the world of children's lit. "A person's a person no matter how small."
