Today at school was a blur! One thing after another after another after another, the day was packed with activities from start to finish, until suddenly it was 3:30 and time to go home. Whew! I had a moment to breathe again!
My ride came to pick me up, and I happily hopped into the car for the drive home. My chauffeur Maggie David (one of my grown children) and I had some nice conversations on the way -- and we even stopped for some ice cream. Yum! When we were getting near home, I turned the conversation to how important it was that I have my phone with me at school.
"Remember the day that I left the phone in the car when you dropped me off?" I asked her. That had happened a few days ago, and I expressed how fortunate it was that she had noticed and returned with my phone within a few minutes, even as I was calling my phone from another teacher's phone.
"Mom," Maggie David began, "that was just this morning."
"No!" It couldn't have been this morning. Several days had passed since that early morning incident. "No, it was a few days ago, " I insisted. "Wasn't it?"
"It was this morning," she repeated. Then tiny glimpses of doubt crept in. "Wasn't it?"
Neither of us was sure about reality at that point.
An inspiration hit Maggie David. "Check your phone log! See when you called your phone from Jane's phone!"
And there it was, staring me in the face:
A 23-second phone call from Jane's phone, which seemed as if it took place several days ago, had just happened this morning. Nine hours had passed, yet my brain was remembering it as several days. Nine hours equal several days? How could that be?
Sigh....
The brain is a funny thing, so I'm not going to even TRY to figure it out.
I just hope that tomorrow is a day that consists of only twenty-four hours.

Haha what a fun twist at the end- I loved the levity you provided. This made me chuckle and think back to the last day I felt this way. Sometimes it's nice when the day passes so quickly, other days it's disconcerting.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Megan! Thanks for the comment! :-)
DeleteThat is quite a day! However, at least it ended in ice cream. That's a win. Your dialogue worked really well in this story.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cathy! Yes, the ice cream was definitely a win. :-)
DeleteOH wow LOL, I'm sorry you had such a , hopefully tomorrow is better and feels like only ONE day!
ReplyDeleteThank you! The next day WAS better, haha. :-)
